Coping with Homesickness
This blog was written by YMCA Newcomer Information Centre Information and Referral Specialist, Lena Samoilichenko.
Moving to a new country opens the door to a world of possibilities but can also bring sadness and homesickness. This feeling is familiar and natural to many newcomers. It’s important to remember that adjusting to a new environment takes time and patience. Let’s look at ways you can help ease this transition and make the most of your new surroundings:
1. Embrace Your Emotions
Homesickness is like an uninvited guest that shows up when you least expect it. Recognizing and embracing these feelings rather than pushing them aside is essential. Understand that it’s okay to miss your home country’s familiar sights, sounds, and dishes. You have to accept these difficult emotions to find ways to cope.
2. Build a Support Network
Connecting with others who are going through similar experiences can be incredibly comforting. Try looking up your local newcomer communities, support groups, or cultural organizations. The Newcomer Information Centre, for instance, offers English Conversation Circles groups, where you can meet people who share similar feelings and challenges, as well as practice your conversational English language skills. Sharing your thoughts with others can create a sense of acceptance and understanding.
3. Stay Virtually Connected
In the digital age, distance doesn’t have to mean disconnection. You should use the available technology to stay in touch with friends and family back home. Schedule regular video calls, share updates on social media, and participate in virtual gatherings. Your loved ones are just a video call away, and remembering that can provide a sense of closeness, even when miles apart. Take advantage of these virtual tools to stay close to your loved ones.
4. Establish Routines and Hobbies
Establishing daily routines and engaging in activities you enjoy can help distract you from feelings of homesickness. Whether it’s taking a daily walk, joining a local sports club, or participating in hobby groups, new experiences can be a powerful antidote to homesickness. New routines and hobbies can also help you connect with others and build a support system in your new community.
Additionally, transforming your new living space into one that is comfortable and familiar can ease homesickness. Decorate with items that remind you of home, cook traditional meals, or listen to music that brings back fond memories. By surrounding yourself with familiar elements, you can make your new environment feel more like home.
5. Seek Professional Guidance
If homesickness continues to overwhelm your daily life, consider seeking professional support. Professionals can offer guidance on managing homesickness and adapting to your new surroundings. You can refer to organizations like The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health & the Canadian Mental Health Association to find available mental health resources and programs. Additionally, you can access the free and confidential ConnexOntario Helpline, made for people experiencing problems with their mental health. Local organizations, like the YMCA Newcomer Information Centre, can also provide referrals to counselling services or support groups.
Homesickness is a natural part of the immigrant experience, but it doesn’t define or end your journey. If you need additional support or resources, feel free to visit the YMCA Newcomer Information Centre.
